About the Club
Arguably one of the most elegant clubs in the world, Annabel’s – a Birley Club – has a global reputation that has been established over the past five decades, founded on superb service, enviable ambience, first-class cuisine and entertainment. A private members club and restaurant, Annabel’s was founded in 1963 by Mark Birley.
Situated on Berkeley Square in London’s exclusive Mayfair district, the Club’s understated entrance leads into a world of elegance and style. Here, Members can relax with an expertly created cocktail in the intimacy of the bar, surrounded by magnificent artwork, before moving through to enjoy an exquisite dinner in the beautiful dining room, with its Moorish ceiling and unique starlit dance floor.
Over the years the Club’s dress code has been considered and debated at length. Whilst elegance will always remain at its heart, the Club has acknowledged that style and design has evolved. From now on, in addition to beautiful evening wear, smart, dark, tailored jeans will be permitted for both men and women. Men will still be required to wear jackets and collared shirts and as always, Annabel’s reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone that does not meet the standard of dress required. Members are fervently encouraged to dress up.
Lastly, we would ask Members and their guests to refrain from wearing the following:
- Leather or suede
- Office wear
- Exposed undergarments
- Trainers or deck shoes
- Casual or cowboy boots
- Leather or suede
- Collarless shirts
- Untucked shirts
- Polo necks
- Casual or cowboy boots
Annabel’s prides itself on impeccable service and on maintaining the best of traditional values and the most exemplary of standards. Our highly professional team of skilled and dedicated staff – some of whom have worked at the Club for more than four decades – are expertly trained in their individual crafts and stop at nothing to accord Members and their guests the attention that they deserve.
Our General Manager joined the Club in early 2014 with thirty years’ experience working in high-profile establishments across the globe, having returned to London from twenty years working in Bermuda. In Bermuda, Claudio collaborated with Michael Douglas to create and run his family hotel and restaurant which he co-owned. Ahead of this Claudio worked in Monte Carlo for two years, as well as the Four Seasons and La Gavroche in London for eight years.
Our Assistant General Manager has a background working at some of the best hotels across the globe. Cristiano’s early career started in London at Claridge's and at The Hassler in Rome ahead of seventeen years working at the Four Seasons Hotel group. Working for the Four Seasons has taken him around the world from London, Hawaii, Mexico, Chicago and most notably Florence where he was part of the opening team before returning back to London to open the new Four Seasons at Park Lane.
Our Assistant Restaurant Manager founded his career working at some of Italy’s most illustrious hotels and restaurants before arriving in London. After honing his skills at the Park Lane Hotel Piccadilly and The Dorchester, Manuele joined the Annabel’s team in 1985 as a waiter, and has grown with the Club ever since.
A true Annabel’s Ambassador, Mohamed has enjoyed a long and distinguished career at Annabel’s, during which his contribution was immeasurable. Having left Morocco in 1967 to join the Club as a commis waiter, he quickly became Mark Birley’s protégé and, in time, took the position of head barman. Mr Birley’s invaluable right-hand man, he remained at Annabel’s for 44 years before going into semi-retirement in 2011.
Frank Sinatra was among the first to join and, since then, its illustrious clientele has included representatives of the British Royal Family – among them HM The Queen, HRH The Prince of Wales, HRH The Duke of Cambridge; heads of state, such as Richard Nixon; and legends of the music and film industry, including Ella Fitzgerald, Jack Nicholson, The Rolling Stones and Dames Elizabeth Taylor and Shirley Bassey.
The sumptuous interior, originally designed by Mark Birley and designer Nina Campbell, has since been updated by Mr Birley’s daughter, India Jane, but her father’s outstanding collection of paintings remains in situ.
Over the years, Annabel’s has hosted some truly wonderful parties, including a week of fashion shows, devised by the late Alexander McQueen and Simon Costin, featuring the largest collection of diamonds ever displayed in Britain; an exclusive dinner party with British royalty – Princess Margaret – and Hollywood royalty – Frank Sinatra; and the memorable fancy-dress hen party of Sarah, Duchess of York - one of her guests, dressed in the guise of a policeman, was the late Princess Diana.
