How to plan your perfect party with Urban Caprice

5 Minutes with Lucy Verner, Managing Director

For those wanting to celebrate for work or play look no further than Urban Caprice, our sister company, who specialise in catering bespoke events, weddings and parties. They can also recreate the menus and magic of Annabel's for your own private event.

Urban Caprice is considered one of London's leading event caterers, with years of experience in delivering flawless events for a diverse range of clients. Managing Director, Lucy Verner reveals all on how to plan a perfect party this festive season.

How did you get into parties?

I actually studied graphic design, but an opportunity arose shortly after arriving in London for what was meant to be only the summer. Before I knew it, I was working on some amazing parties and events and sitting in front of an Apple Mac all day became less appealing.

Being part of the stable which owns some of the most iconic London brands means that we can offer the restaurant experience at our clients’ events or even at home.

We have a kitchen of chefs from all over the world so we can turn our hand to any cuisine. Our signature style though is mostly influenced by Scandinavian and European tastes with the focus being on seasonal produce and heritage breeds.

Your ideal party guest?

Anyone who appreciates excellent food and wine coupled with interesting conversation and a good sense of humour.

Most precarious moment?

One summer we were catering for hundreds of guests in the Secret Garden at Taste London. The chefs called me to say they were running late. I was a little cross and when I asked why I realised it could have been a whole lot worse. Someone had just stolen our van and fortunately they only made away with two kegs of cooking oil. Had it been 20 minutes later the van would have been full of food and the event would have be a disaster as there would have been no way of saving it!

Advice to your host?

Don’t over complicate your menu – you don’t want to be in the kitchen all night

Don’t serve anything you haven’t tried successfully to cook before

Think carefully about the table plan and who should be seated next to who – don’t try and match make people – can be awkward when it’s obvious

Provide an interesting non-alcoholic alternative and stock up on the rest so you don’t have to do a corner shop dash!

Check your guests have no allergies

Create an appropriate playlist that you can leave running all evening

Essential ingredient for a great party?

Great guests, food, drinks, music and lighting. All essential.

Favourite venue?

Depends of what the event is and what time of year. A central London winter wedding – Two Temple Place or One Marylebone, a summertime wedding – Hampton Court Palace or Blenheim Palace. For a big private or corporate party, One Embankment is a great blank canvas.

Cocktail or Champagne?

Personally, I am a Champagne girl, but cocktails are hugely popular and are a great party starter after dinner. Contemporary classics, espresso martinis and mojitos remain very much in demand.

Who or what couldn’t you do it without?

My team. And suppliers. You are only as good as the sum of your parts.

Most likely to be seen…

Tweaking tables front of house or overseeing the kitchen pass back of house.
